Male Wistar rats of bodyweight 250 to 300 g were fed for 15 days on a semisynthetic diet and then transferred to climatic chambers maintained at 25 deg or 7 deg C; feeding in the chamber was on a low- or high-protein diet or a normal diet. At autopsy activity of serine dehydrase was estimated in liver homogenates. Exposure to cold caused within about 4 days a significant rise in enzyme activity irrespective of the diet. The low-protein gave the least and the high-protein diet the highest enzyme activity at both temperatures.
