Comparative efficacy of intranasally and parenterally administered infectious bovine rhinotracheitis vaccines

When administered as a spray, a commercial infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus vaccine did not produce any adverse effects in 6- to 8-month calves raised on a colostrum-free diet; the vaccine virus was transmitted to contact control calves. The geometric mean serum antibody titres of calves inoculated intranasally were slightly lower in calves vaccinated by parenteral injection. Antibody was barely detectable in the nasal secretions of either group. The response of each group to an immunity challenge which resulted in severe disease in the challenged control calves was marked by lack of fever and clinical signs of illness, other than mild irritation of the nasal mucosa. It was concluded that IBR vaccine may be given safely by the nasal route, but that administration of the vaccine in this manner does not offer any advantages over parenteral injection.
