Effect of some adrenergic drugs on fertility in rats--a preliminary communication

Sympathetic function was experimentally modified by means of drugs during ovum transport in rats. Fertility was not altered by adrenergic neuron blockade (guanethidine) or by alpha or β adrenoceptor blockade (phenoxybenzamine and (±) propranolol), but it was significantly reduced by the administration of oxymetazoline hydrochloride. Mild to moderate hypertension brought about by unilateral renal ligation failed to affect significantly the mean number of inplants. The present study indicates that either the adrenergic system is not a critical factor in the process of ovum transport and contraception or other control systems of the oviduct offset the modification of adrenergic function in rats.
