During incubation in a glucose-bicarbonate buffer, pancreatic slices from normal rats liberated pentose, pyruvate and proteins into the medium. The amounts of pentose, pyruvate and proteins liberated were increased in thiamine deficiency. Protein secretion was enhanced more in the duodenal region of the pancreas while the glucose uptake, pentose release and pyruvate liberation were also increased significantly. Hence, the anorexia in thiamine deficiency is not likely to be due to any defect in the exocrine function of the pancreas.
