The role of brain monoaminergic and cholinergic neurotransmitter systems in C. indica resin (CI) induced catalepsy in albino mice was investigated by means of pharmacological agents that influence these transmitters. .DELTA.9 Tetrahydrocannabinol content of CI was estimated to be 17%. CI induced catalepsy was significantly inhibited after pretreatment with drugs that reduce brain serotonin activity or enhance dopaminergic activity and by atropine. CI induced catalepsy was potentiated by serotonin precursors and by drugs that reduce brain catecholamine activity, as also by central cholinomimetic agents. The results point to a close similarity between the mechanism of Cannabis induced catalepsy and that reported with neuroleptics.
