Sensitivity of mosquito larvae to insecticides in the region of Tunis in 1984 and 1988

Chlorpyrifos (as Dursban), temephos (Abate) and fenthion (Baytex) were tested in the laboratory according to WHO methodology against 3rd- and 4th-instar larvae of Culex pipiens from the Tunis region, Tunisia, in 1984-88. Despite the widespread use of these 3 organophosphorus compounds for vector control in Tunisia, the resistance rates never exceeded 15, which is much lower than the rates observed in other countries. Of the 32 populations of C. pipiens examined, 21 showed tolerance or resistance. Levels of resistance did not vary greatly during 1984-88, and all the resistant strains were collected from urban areas of Tunis that were regularly sprayed in vector control campaigns.
