Virological examination of mosquito larvae from southern Moravia

Larvae of 9 species of mosquitoes (4115 examples) were collected in 1974-75 in breeding places in an inundated forest in southern Moravia (Czechoslovakia) known to be a natural focus of Tahyna virus and attempts were made to isolate viruses from these larvae and from others collected from tree holes in the Breclav district in 1975. Tahyna virus was isolated from 1 pool of 10 Culiseta annulata (Schr.) collected in July 1974. C. annulata occurs in the inundated forest only sporadically, being found more frequently in poultry farms. The adults of this species overwinter, but further studies are necessary to determine whether there is transovarial transmission of Tahyna virus or whether the larvae investigated had acquired it at the breeding sites.
