Virological investigations of mosquitoes in some biotopes of southern Moravia in summer season 1972

Investigations in inundated forest, ponds, poultry farms and caves, cellars and other shelters in several places in southern Moravia, Czechoslovakia, in the summer of 1972 yielded 45 963 mosquitos of 5 genera and 18 species. Of these, 16 057 were Culex modestus Fic. 7442 were Aedes vexans (Mg.), 4422 were Anopheles maculipennis Mg. and 4296 were Aedes sticticus (Mg.). Altogether, 33 903 examples were tested for the presence of virus. Ten strains of Tahyna virus were isolated from Aedes spp. and six strains of Yaba I from C. modestus. The highest infection rate was in mosquitos from inundated forests and the least from poultry farms and occasional shelters.
