o-Phenylphenol was tested as a 5% soln. in sesame oil and as a 0.1% aqueous soln. of the Na salt on 200 human subjects. No primary skin irritation or skin sensitization occurred. In rats the acute oral toxicity was low (LD50 2.7 g./kg.). Male and female rats that were maintained for 2 yrs. on diets containing 0, 0.2, and 0.2% o-phenylphenol; no adverse effects were noted on growth, mortality, hematology, urine sugar and protein values, organ weights, tissue content of o-phenylphenol, or histopathplogy of various tissues. A 2% o-phenyl-phenol diet for 2 yrs. did retard growth and histological kidney changes did occur. In dogs oral doses of 0, 0.02, and 0.2 and 0.5 g./kg./day of o-phenylphenol for 1 yr. produced no adverse effects.
