Toxicity studies were carried out with 28 h old larvae of Musca domestica employing methyl xanthines (theophylline, theobromine and aminophylline), halogenated pyrimidines (5-fluorouracil and 5-bromouracil), DNA binding agents and synthesis inhibitors (hydroxylamine, spermine and hydroxyurea), antibiotics (streptomycin and terramycin), dimethyl sulfoxide and nicotine as test chemicals. All the chemicals exerted dose-dependent growth retardation of the larvae. Usefulness of the housefly as a test system is discussed.
