Toxicological studies on tetrachlorvinphos

A series of acute and long-term toxicological feeding studies, were carried out on the organophosphous insecticide tetrachlorvinphos (TCVP). The acute oral LD50 for technical and pure insecticide were 3560, 1379 (rats and mice) and 1878 mg/kg (mice) respectively. In 14 week feeding studies significant changes in relative organ weights (organ weight/body weight) and in inhibition of blood cholinesterase were found in groups fed on diets containing 625 and 3000 ppm of TCVP. Those fed with 3000 and 750 ppm TCVP in the 1 year test showed marked inhibition of blood cholinesterase. Food efficiency, hematological findings, liver and kidney function, pathology examination showed no significant difference between the groups. A dosage of 125 ppm was considered the MNL for the insecticide in rats with the 14 week study, but in the one year feeding study the MNL was 150 ppm. No delayed neurotoxicity, teratogenicity and mutagenicity were observed in TCVP.
