Chloramphenicol decomposes more rapidly in aqueous solutions at higher pH values (range 6 to 8), at higher temperatures of sterilization (boiling and autoclaving at 115°C) and storage (27° to 70°C), and at higher concentrations (0.25 and 0.5%). It also decomposes more rapidly in phosphate buffer than in borax (pH, temperature, and concentration held constant). It was analyzed by extraction from acid solution in ethyl acetate, dried, and weighed. It is recommended that borax buffer solution, pH 6, be used for chloramphenicol eye solutions.
