Numerous studies have reported on the lack of agreement between the microbiological determinations and the physico-chemical methods used for detecting the presence of degradation compounds. The absorption spectrum of the degradation product p. nitrophenyl-amino-propandiol is similar to that of chloramphenicol, thus masking the degradation process. With the chloramphenicol formulae studied the stability of the antibiotic was established in terms of concentration, nature of the vehicle, adjuvants used, pH and time, Chromatographic separation of the degradation products, correlated with bacteriological determinations, led to certain conclusions concerning the stability of chloramphenicol and its disposability in the fluid pharmaceutical forms.
