A new triterpenoid lactone, named uralenolide, mp 302 .apprx. 303.degree. C, was isolated after acid hydrolysis from extracts of the rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza uralensis. This structure, 3.beta., 22.beta., 24-trihydroxy-olean-11, 13(18)-dien-30-oic acid (30, 22.beta.)-lactone, was confirmed by spectroscopic data (UV, IR, MS, NMR). Another one, methyl 18.alpha.-hydroxy glycyrrhetate, was identified to be a known sapogenin. It was first reported to be present in this plant.
