Recombinant DNA technology has enabled the generation of bacteria capable of synthesizing P. falciparum proteins. This allows purified and characterized protein antigens to be tested for possible protective effect. Several antigens have been identified as promising candidate vaccine molecules and current progress in cloning them is reviewed.
