The identification of antigens involved in protection against malaria, by experimental immunization, is discussed, and some potential candidate antigens for an asexual blood stage vaccine (merozoite surface antigens, antigens associated with the membrane of infected erythrocytes, rhoptry proteins, other candidates) are described. The role of synthetic peptides as immunogens is also discussed.
