An extensive library of antigen-expressing cDNA clones which includes a large number of distinct P. falciparum asexual blood-stage antigens has been prepared. Sequencing studies on the clones showed that many malaria antigens contain extensive sequence repeats. The repeats encode antigenic epitopes which in several proteins have been shown to be immunodominant. Ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen (RESA) and falciparum interspersed repeat antigen (FIRA) are described.
