This paper summarizes experiences of non-formal education in Pakistan: mosque schools; madrasah education (dissemination of Islamic thought); mohallah schools (for purdah-observing women); and village workshop schools. The role of Allama Iqbal Open University in the national literacy movement and in providing functional education programmes is examined, and reviewed efforts to train primary teachers are discussed.
