The effect of etomidate sulfate on the O2 consumption, phosphorylation and ATPase activity of rat kidney, liver and heart in vitro was studied. O2 consumption was measured by manometric technique and ATPase activity by a colorimetric method. Oxidative metabolism of kidney, liver and heart was inhibited by 10-3 M etomidate sulfate. O2 consumption was increased by 10-5 M etomidate sulfate in rat liver slices and by 10-5 and 10-6 M etomidate in rat heart slices, both incubated in normal Krebs-Ringer phosphate solution. Na, K and Mg ATPase activity in kidney homogenates was not modified by 10-6, 10-5 and 10-4M etomidate sulfate.
