Effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on the activity of red cell thromboplastin factor (RCTF) was studied in healthy subjects and in patients with atherosclerosis. Inconsistent and not pronounced lowering of procoagulant activity of intact red blood cells was noted in vivo but not in vitro. This lowering was detectable only in the relatively early stage of hemocoagulation and did not affect the magnitude of thrombin maximal activity and the time of its generation. The absence of evident inhibition of RCTF and essential role of erythrocytic factor in hemocoagulation suggest limitations of the potential properties of ASA as an antithrombotic agent. A decrease in the proactivating effect (though not marked) of intact red cells on hemocoagulation induced by the therapeutic agent and disclosed for the 1st time is of crucial importance.
