Bacteriological investigations of swabs from the genital tract for the organism of the contagious equine metritis (CEM)

Among 644 samples from the genital tract of warm-blooded (light to moderately heavy horses) mares and stallions collected between January and December 1979, Haemophilus equigenitalis was isolated from 19 samples from 15 mares, of which 17 were from cervical swabs and one each from uterine and vaginal mucus. No stallion was positive. Swab samples were taken as follows: 119 clitoris, 8 urinary tract, 16 vagina, 177 cervix, 57 unknown, 91 penis, 88 urethra, 65 presecretion and 8 semen samples. The bacterium grew well on chocolate agar in an atmosphere of 95% N and 5% CO2. It showed catalase and oxidase activity. Sixteen strains were sensitive to the 11 antibacterial agents tested, including streptomycin; one was resistant to penicillin G and polymyxin B, 4 to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and all 16 were resistant to the sulfonamide tested.
