Continued research and field experience since the author's previous publication [VB 48, abst. 1058] warrant the following additional recommendations: 1) High standards of hygiene are re-emphasized and should be followed also in the covering yard. 2) The reported isolation of the causal organism from the clitoral fossa of mares necessitates the taking of clitoral as well as cervical and urethral swabs. 3) When dealing with maiden mares, a set of swabs should be taken at the first heat and the animal not covered until shown to be negative. 4) Details of swabbing procedure are given. 5) Teasers should be treated as stallions as regards the screening programme. 6) The high standards of hygiene required in dealing with thoroughbreds should be maintained for all breeds of horses. 7) The reporting procedure for positive cases is described.
