A cooked blood agar medium for the contagious equine metritis organism and other fastidious bacteria

Eugon agar base and 10% horse blood were found to be the most suitable ingredients. The basal blood agar ingredients were disolved in distilled water and autoclaved at 121 deg C for 15 minutes. 25% of the horse blood was added and heated in a water bath for 15 minutes at 80 deg C. The cooked blood turned brown and formed small floccules. It was cooled to 45 deg C in a water bath and the remaining whole blood added. The cooked blood agar consistently supported growth of contagious equine metritis organism and appeared to be as good as or superior to either chocolate or blood agar for culturing other fastidious bacteria.
