Of 6028 cervical swabs from warmblooded mares in northwestern Germany 16% had a significant bacterial content. Among these, the proportion yielding beta -haemolytic streptococci fell steadily from 84.2% in 1969 to 54.6% in 1973. On the other hand, the proportion yielding organisms such as Staph. aureus, Klebsiella, haemolytic E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and yeasts increased from 15.6% in 1969 to 45% in 1973. Only a few of the 128 streptococcal strains tested were resistant to antibiotics, though 106 were resistant to sulphonamides. A high proportion to Staph. aureus and Pseudomonas strains were antibioticresistant. Klebsiella and E. coli strains were sensitive to certain antibiotics.
