In 1976-1978 the dependence of mean potential fertility of midges on the type of the annual cycle, pattern of feeding, features of sex gland development in pupae and females, as well as on the size of the wings was investigated. The association of the mean species fertility with the length of the wings within groups with a similar life cycle in all nonautogenous mammaliophilic species and deviations from this association in nonautogenous ornitophilic (increased fertility) and autogenous mammaliophilic (decreased fertility) species were established. In groups with different annual cycles the influence of biological properties of the species on stabilization of fertility was analyzed.
