Seasonal succession of some common species of the genus Culicoides (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) in southern Taiwan

In a study of the population dynamics of species of Culicoides at 4 localities in southern Taiwan between August 1962 and December 1963, 107 332 specimens representing 17 species were collected. Of this total, C. schultzei (End.) comprised 48.47%, C. nipponensis Tokunaga, 39.65%, C. arakawai (Arakawa), 2.18% and the remaining species each less than 0.1%. Collections were made in Lingya, an urban district, Fengliao, a rural area near the sea, and Machia, a montane region. C. schultzei was abundant between August and November 1962 at all localities, and also in March and July at Chaochow. C. nipponensis was abundant from February to September at Chaochow and from late August to October and in March in Fengliao. C. arakawai was common at Chaochow, Machia and Fengliao between February and May, and C. maculatus Shir., which was common only at Machia, reached its peak of abundance between May and July, with a smaller peak in September and October. All species were present only in low numbers in December and January, presumably as a result of the lower temperatures prevailing.
