Seasonal succession of some common species of the genus Culicoides latreille 1809 (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) in central Taiwan

The seasonal succession of Culicoides midges in central Taiwan was studied from August 1962 to December 1963 at 4 localities. A total of 26 729 examples, representing 18 species, was collected. C. arakawai (Arakawa) showed only 1 population peak, in March and April, at all study stations; C. schultzei (End.) showed a peak in late spring at Huwei and Hsinshe, and a second peak in summer at Huwei and in late autumn at Hsinshe. Both C. humeralis Okada and C. maculatus Shir. were dominant over other species only at Hoping and showed a common peak between late summer and early autumn. C. duodenarius Kieff. was dominant over other species only at Huwei and showed a peak in July-September. The seasonal fluctuation of some common biting midges was influenced significantly by temperature and rainfall. The relationship between the seasonal fluctuation of C. arakawai and the annual outbreak of leucocytozoonosis of fowls in Taiwan is discussed.
