Seasonal succession of some common species of the genus Culicoides (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) in eastern Taiwan

Culicoides schultzei (End.) accounted for 67.96% and C. arakawai (Arakawa) 25.01% of 40 049 adults representing 18 species of Culicoides collected in eastern Taiwan in 1962-63. Populations of C. schultzei showed a peak at all stations studied in August-September 1962, one in April-May at Shoufeng and Luyeh and one at Shoufeng and Taitung in August 1963. C. arakawai peaked at all stations except Luyeh in November 1962, and had a peak at all stations in April-May 1963. Ceratopogonid populations were high in April-September, with a brief reduction in numbers of C. nipponensis Tokunaga at Hualien in June. This species persisted in high numbers at Taitung in March-August. Numbers of C. nipponensis were high at Luyeh in March-May.
