A checklist of the species of Culicoides found in Portugal and Madeira is presented, based on specimens captured in CDC light traps in surveys conducted from 1977 to 1989. Fourteen species (C. atripennis, C. begueti, C. furcillatus, C. haranti, C. heteroclitus, C. indistinctus, C. kurensis, C. pallidicornis, C. pseudoheliophilus, C. scoticus, C. similis baghdadensis, C. subfascipennis and C. univittatus) are new records for Portugal, bringing the total number of Culicoides for the Portuguese fauna to 41. C. algecirensis, C. newsteadi and C. scoticus were found in Madeira.
