I.v. infusion of tender coconut water [TCW] to paraldehyde and chloralose-urethane anesthetized dogs at a rate of 0.5 ml/kg per min to a total dose of 100 ml/kg body wt decreased serum Na and increased K and Ca levels. Simultaneously, urinary Na excretion decreased and K and Ca excretion increased and there was glycosuria. Serum electrolyte changes were more prominent in paraldehyde anesthetized dogs. TCW was recommended parenterally as a substitute for standard physiological fluids in animals. Small doses of coconut water have been used in various types of human clinical conditions. Eiseman and Suresh et al. showed that coconut water was sterile, pyrogen-free, non-antigenic and non-hemolysing in dog and man, and that dogs tolerate large doses i.v.
