Urine flow, osmolar clearance, and sodium excretion increased in dogs exposed to cold, but a similar trend was also observed in animals studied under identical conditions but at neutral temperature. By contrast, free water reabsorption decreased after exposure to cold, and it increased in control animals. Clearances of exogenous creatinine and p-aminohippurate did not change. The fall in water reabsorption was dissociated from plasma antidiuretic hormone, which increased in dogs exposed to cold but not in those maintained at neutral temperature. Plasma 17-hydroxycorticosteroids rose after exposure to cold, while a slight and inconsistent increase was observed for control dogs.
