Some systemic effects of superficial dermatomycosis

A case of rheumatoid-like arthritis, arteritis and chronic generalized and progressive symptomatology (including lethargy, low-grade fever, joint pain, headaches, conjunctivitis, parotitis, gingivitis, laryngitis, fatigue, vasculitis, tenosynovitis and vertigo) of many years duration is reported in a 58-yr-old man. Trichophyton sp. was seen once in a cyst of the lower left leg. The patient was treated with oral griseofulvin (500 mg every 12 h) for 12 months. Topical undecylenic acid (ointment, solution and soap) was used daily to treat infection of the feet, hands and nails and undecylenic acid powder was sprinkled in the patient's shoes. During the 12 month treatment period, 35 additional and comparable patients were identified and placed on similar therapy. Where there was a mixed infection with candidosis oral and topical nystatin were used. All patients showed marked improvement, both subjectively and objectively.
