The pharmacological actions of tylophorine, the major alkaloid of T. indica were investigated. The alkaloid was found to produce CNS depression characterised by ptosis, sedation, decreased motor activity and staggering gait. It also potentiated pentobarbital sleeping time and the effect of subanalgesic dose of morphine hydrochloride in rats. Tylophorine did not manifest any significant pharmacological effect on the cardiovascular system. It produced significant antiinflammatory effect in rats as tested by the rat hind paw edema, granuloma pouch and cotton pellet implantation techniques.
