Synergistic action of testosterone propionate and oestradiol benzoate on male genitalia in the Indian gerbil Tatera indica indica

Effects of testosterone propionate (TP) (90 .mu.g/animal per day), estradiol benzoate (EB) (0.015 .mu.g/animal per day) and a combination of TP and EB (90 .mu.g + 0.015 .mu.g/animal per day), administered for 10 days in adult T. indica indica were studied. The combined treatment with TP and EB reduced the weights of testis, epididymis, vas deferens and prostate significantly, reduced the number of spermatozoa in reproductive tract and also increased fructose concentration in vas deferens significantly. In epididymis, sialic acid level was raised significantly by all 3 treatments and lactic acid content was increased after EB and combined hormone treatment. In vas deferens, lactic acid and sialic acid contents were increased only after the combined treatment. Treatment with a suitable combination of male and female sex hormones may have fertility control potentialities.
