Mean cytoplasmic protein concentration of host erythrocytes and the reticulocyte response in Plasmodium berghei infected mice

In Swiss mice infected with Plasmodium berghei the mean cytoplasmic protein concentration of infected erythrocytes decreased from 27.4% on day one to 20.1% on day 9. The parasitaemia increased from 1.9% on the first patent day to a final 22.7%, while the % reticulocytes rose from 1.4% on day one to 24.5% on day 9. The reticulocyte response paralleled the % parasitaemia on all days except day 5 when the increase in % reticulocytes was more than twice that of % parasitaemia. Although the reticulocyte and host cell populations are usually equivalent, the disparity noted suggests the existence of unique characteristics in the reticulocyte response of P. berghei infected mice.
