Observations on the morphology of mice erythrocytes invaded by Plasmodium berghei showed that young parasitic forms with brain-like surfaces were most often buried in invagination of the membranes of spherical erythrocytes. Older schizonts were seen in biconcave erythrocytes, protruding at the periphery, giving the appearance of a ring with a stone setting. A cycle is proposed to explain the changes in erythrocyte morphology.
