Administration (5 mg/kg i.v.) of Escherichia coli endotoxin in cat resulted in changes in blood pressure and blood biogenic amines. Biogenic amines in tissues such as heart, liver, kidney, lung and certain brain areas collected immediately after death also revealed some changes. The changes in blood pressure and blood biogenic amines were triphasic. There was a direct relationship between changes in the blood pressure and blood levels of histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine but inverse relationship between changes in blood pressure and blood levels of adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine. In majority of situations blood and tissue levels of biogenic amines had an inverse relationship except for brain areas where, irrespective of blood levels, uniform decrease in levels of biogenic amines was observed. Disturbance of functioning of various biogenic amines appeared to be responsible for endotoxin shock in cats.
