Plasma ACTH and aldosterone levels in endotoxin shock in rats

Experiments were carried out on 40 male white rats, Wistar breed, divided into 4 groups. Group I was injected i.p. with saline solution, group II i.p. with ACTH (150 .mu.g/kg) for 2 consecutive days and on the 3rd day with saline solution Group III was injected i.v. with endotoxin from the Escherichia coli (10 mg/kg), Group IV injected with ACTH for 2 days and on the 3rd day, endotoxin. All the animals were killed through decapitation within 4 h of introducing endotoxin, respectively, saline solution. Plasma ACTH and aldosterone concentrations were determined through radioimmunoassay. In endotoxin shock an increase in ACTH and aldosterone levels was established. ACTH (150 .mu.g/kg) accounted for a significant increase in plasma ACTH level, and was insignificant in terms of aldosterone.
