Lactic acid concentrations are significantly (p<.001) lower in experimental endotoxin shock than in hemorrhagic shock, despite an equal O2 deficit in 2 groups of dogs. This difference is interpreted as a basic biochemical difference in the 2 forms of shock. Histotoxic hypoxia may compound the stagnant hypoxia of endotoxin shock. Blood lactic acid levels are not as valid an index of prognosis in endotoxin shock as in hemorrhagic shock.
