Quantitative microradiography of 74 specimens of normal rib from persons 11 to 88 years old showed that bone turnover in the rib appears to be relatively constant during a lifetime but that the level of bone resorption is consistently higher than that of bone formation after the age of 20. This consistent level of both formation and resorption is not a feature of turnover in other parts of the skeleton. The haversian systems and the haversian canals remain at about the same size throughout life, while there is a decrease in the thickness of the cortex.
