This paper pertains mainly to the history of biochemistry. An account is given of the ways in which oxidative phosphorylation was discovered by V.A. Engelhardt as published in his classical works. Subsequent investigations of Belitser et al. on the so called electron transport chain phosphorylation, that revealed the high efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation are referred to. New trends and achievements in this field are mentioned.
