Irradiation of laboratory-bred Bulinus truncatus snails of known ages and eggs at various stages of development at 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 or 20,000 r gave the following results. X-irradiation was lethal to snails, the effect increasing with increasing doses, and young snails were more vulnerable than older ones. The egg-laying capacity of irradiated snails compared with controls was reduced and their eggs had a lower hatching ability. Mortality was higher in offspring of irradiated snails than in those of control siblings, and the effect increased with increasing dosage. Eggs were most vulnerable early in development and the effect of irradiation increased with dosage.
