EM studies of influenza virus infection of cells showed the initial stages of virus cell penetration. Changes in virus morphology occurred upon contact of the virus with the cell membrane destruction of the capsid and penetration of the ribonucleoprotein followed. Vacuolation with round (to 1000 .ANG.) inclusions 24 h after infection suggests that viropexis is the cell defensive reaction to the presence of the virus and may be an index of the resistance in cells insensitive to influenza virus.
