Effect of brain, liver and muscle cytosols on in vitro incorporation of labelled amino acids into the ribosomes of these organs during protein depletion

Wistar rats weighing 200 g were given a diet free from protein or a stock diet for 7 weeks. Rats were killed weekly and liver, brain and muscle were homogenised. Ribosomes and cytosols were isolated and were incubated with a Tris-HCl buffer, labelled Chlorella hydrolysate and cysteine, methionine and tryptophan. Results showed that during protein depletion brain cytosols contained agents, as yet not identified, which inhibited the capacity for protein synthesis of muscle ribosomes and stimulated that of liver ribosomes.
