Mebendazole. Treatment of trichuriasis and ascariasis in Bahamian children

Mebendazole was given at 100 mg twice a day for 3 days to 107 Bahamian children (median age 8 years 8 months) with Trichuris infection; 88 were also infected with Ascaris. After 19 days 68.2% were cured of Trichuria and 98.8% (87) of Ascaris (the 88th child may not have taken the medicine). The cure rate was lower in those with Trichuris whose original egg load was greater than 40,000 e.p.g. of faeces. Over-all egg reduction of 97.6% was noted, irrespective of original egg load. There were no untoward side effects.
