A clinical evaluation of the efficacy of mebendazole in the treatment of trichuriasis

In a mental institution near Columbia, South Carolina, 60 patients (all over 6 years old) with light to severe Trichuris trichiura infections were treated with mebendazole. 100 mg was given twice a day for 3 days to 32 and for 4 days to 28. 10 similarly infected patients were given placebos. 21 of the 32 and 25 of the 28 patients were cured, as shown by faecal examination one month after treatment. In those not cured, the egg counts were reduced by 3 and 4-day regimens by 31.6% and 76.8% respectively. The drug was well tolerated and no toxic side effects were seen.
