Phentermine hydrochloride 30 mg. (Fastin) and placebo were evaluated as primary adjunctive therapy in the treatment of exogenously obese outpatients. A randomized, parallel-group double-blind experimental design was employed. Fifty-nine (84%) of the 70 patients who entered the study completed 18 weeks of treatment. A 1000-calorie diet was recommended to all patients. Weight loss was significantly greater for patients treated with phentermine than for patients treated with placebo. Relatively few drug-related side effects occurred. There was no evidence to suggest patients became tolerant to or dependent on phentermine.
