A double blind study of colchicine in Behçet's disease

Colchicine is claimed to be effective in Behget's disease (BD). Here we report the first double blind trial of colchicine in BD. After their initial visit, 35 consenting patients with BD were randomized into groups receiving either colchicine (0.5 mg) or placebo (lactose +phenolphtaleine 60 mg) capsules t.i.d. Fourteen patients received colchicine, 14 received placebo. There were 7 drop outs, 4 from the placebo and 3 from the colchicine group. There were no differences in most of the parameters measured in each group. There was a suggestion however that colchicine might be useful in controlling erythema nodosum and arthralgias in some patients.
