The hyperglycaemic activities of noradrenaline (NE), salbutamol (S) and glucagon (G) were compared in fed normal and fasted normal rabbits and in fed alloxan-diabetic rabbits controlled with insulin. Plasma insulin levels were determined during the infusion with S. The antagonism by propranolol of the hyperglycaemic responses to NE, S and G in starved normal rabbits was also determined. Responses to NE and G in fed normal rabbits were greater than in starved normal animals, whereas response to S was the same in both groups. In diabetic rabbits, the peak hyperglycaemic responses to G and S were increased greatly by the abolition of acute insulin release, but the peak response to NE in diabetic animals was the same as that in fed normal rabbits. Therefore, the ability of certain drugs to cause the acute release of insulin can greatly influence their hyperglycaemic activities. The hyperglycaemic response to S was suppressed completely by propranolol, but responses to NE and G were not noticeably affected.
