The activities of certain glycohydrolases (.beta.-glucuronidase, .beta.-hexosaminidase, .beta.-glucosidase and .beta.-galactosidase), enzymes involved in the degradation of glycoproteins and glycuronoglycans, were assayed in serum of normal and alloxan diabetic rabbits. The increased activities of these enzymes in the serum of alloxan diabetic rabbits were brought towards normal on compensation of the uncontrolled diabetes with insulin, glibenclamide and tolbutamide. During decompensation, i.e., when treatment was withdrawn from the controlled alloxan diabetic rabbits the serum glycohydrolases increased to very high levels irrespective of the nature of prior treatment. The pattern of changes occurring in the activities of these glycohydrolases in serum are in tune with changes in blood glucose concentration. There apparently is a direct relation between glycemia and glycohydrolase activities in alloxan diabetes.
